Episode #52:  Appreciation

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

First of all, I’d like to open my mailbox and read a message from a listener named Hiro.  He writes:

“This podcast is cool! It’s good to see what you said in the lesson.

I’ll keep listening.  Thanks.”

And thank you, Hiro, for your kind words.  I really appreciate it.  Showing someone appreciation makes them feel that they are doing a good job and are needed.  It helps us build relationships.  Here are a few phrases that seem pretty successful:

You can just say “thank you,” or be more specific with phrases like:

Thank you for being a friend.

Thanks for helping with the party.

You can also say, “I’m glad you’re my friend.”

Of course the warmest phrase is, “I love you.”

Good job!

Hey, Valentine’s Day is coming soon so practice that last phrase on the people around you.  You’ll see a BIG difference.  This is David Hylton with BLT Eigo… signing off.  See you next time right here on BLTnetwork.com.  Bye.

Episode #51:  Happy New Year!

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Happy New Year and in Japanese, Akemashite omedetougozaimasu!  Try saying that ten times fast!  Can you believe it’s already 2009?  It seems like only yesterday I was still writing 1999 on all my letters.  Anyway,  with a new year comes a New Year’s Resolution. A resolution is basically a promise you make to do something.  For example, my resolution this year is to study more Japanese writing characters called kanji. The reason?  I’m embarrassed to say, I can’t read very well and my writing is horrible.

OK, let’s try a few examples then you can make your own resolution:

I will study kanji very hard this year.

I won’t eat as much chocolate this year.

I will exercise more this year.

I won’t spend money on useless things this year.

I will listen to every BLT Eigo episode this year!

Good job!

See you next time right here on BLTnetwork.com.

Check out our last post of 2008 about Christmas…in which I sing.  Yes, no kidding…I actually sing.  Here is the link:  http://eigo.bltnetwork.com/2008/12/25/merry-christmas/

Lesson #50: Merry Christmas

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Yes, it’s that time of year when we give something back to our friends and family. And what better way to show them that you care than by singing a Christmas song. In this final 2008 episode of BLT Eigo, I will sing for all my loyal fans…all three of you. To be honest, I’m an awful singer but my boss said I have to do it or else… I don’t know what the “else” is, but I’m sure I don’t want to find out.

Anyway, please sing with me, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a happy New Year.

Good job!

Whew! I’m glad that’s over! Thanks for joining BLT Eigo right here on BLTnetwork.com. See you next year. Bye!

Lesson #49:  Christmas Shopping

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Whoa!  I just looked at the calendar and realized Christmas is less than two weeks away…. I really need to go shopping, but first, I’ll teach you some phrases much more useful than, “How much is this?”

Repeat after me:

Can I see that one?

Can I get a large one? (small, medium, blue, red, etc.)

Can I get it gift wrapped?

Can I get a discount?

Can I use a credit card?

And finally….

Can I send this to my great English Coach, David Hylton?

Just kidding…

But good Job anyway!

Thanks for joining BLT Eigo right here on BLTnetwork.com. See you next time…if I make it back from shopping. Bye!

Lesson #48:  Thanksgiving

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

In American, we celebrate a special day to give thanks for everything in our lives.  It’s called Thanksgiving Day and falls on Thursday, November 27th in 2008.  But it’s not always on November 27th. It changes every year.  It falls on the fourth Thursday of November so, in 2009, we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the 26th.

When I was a child, we celebrated Thanksgiving Day by eating Thanksgiving dinner, lots of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, stuff like that…and watching parades and football on TV.

Now living in Japan, all that has changed. My wife hates turkey, so we usually eat chicken or fish…and watch DVD movies.   It’s not bad but I sure miss that smoked turkey.

Anyway, I would like to thank all of you for being a friend of BLT Eigo.  I hope you will continue watching and tell all your family and friends to join us.

OK, now repeat after me:

Thank you for being a friend.

Good Job!

Now go out and thank all your friends and family.  Join us next time right here on BLT Eigo.  Bye.

Lesson #47:  Would you mind…?

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

In this episode, I’m talking about “requests”… or how to ask for something.  If you want a glass of water or need to see a doctor, it’s important to know how to ask.  Here are some easy phrases and responses.

A. I feel sick.  Can I see the doctor now?

B. Sure, go ahead.

A. Could you open the door?

B. OK, no problem.

“Would you mind” or “Do you mind” are more polite forms.  You are asking if the request is a problem. If it isn’t a problem then the answer will be “no.”  Here are some examples:

A. Do you mind if I use your telephone?

B. No, not at all.

A. Would you mind carrying these books?

B. No, I’m happy to help.

NOTE:  Sometimes the listener will make a mistake and say “yes,” so listen and watch carefully.

Good Job!

Would you mind joining BLT Eigo next time?  No?  That’s great!  See you then.  Bye.

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

These days, all the news seems to be bad news… everyone is afraid of something.  Here are some common phrases used to talk about fear.  Repeat after me:

We’re anxious about the economy.

I’m worried about my job.

She’s afraid to walk at night.

He’s frightened of snakes.

My mother is terrified of flying.

Lesson #44:  Riddles

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Time to exercise that brain again.  Here are a few great riddles I found on the internet.  See if you can answer them before I give you the answers.

1. What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, and has a bed but never sleeps?

It’s…. a river.

2. What is full of holes but still holds water?

Baaaa… a sponge.

3. What is lighter than a feather, but even the strongest man cannot hold it more than a few minutes?

Time’s up!  His breath!

Good job!

If you didn’t get them all right, don’t worry… I still think you are very smart for joining BLT Eigo, right here on BLTnetwork.com. See you next time. Bye!

Lesson #43:  It’s mine!

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Hey, whose dirty coffee cup is this on my desk?  What? Oh, it’s mine?  I guess I left it here after my last show….Whoops.

Anyway, today’s topic is about “possessive pronouns” like mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs.

When someone asks, “Whose coffee cup is this?”, you might say, “It’s my coffee cup,” or you could simply say, “It’s mine.”  Mine equals “my coffee cup.”  OK, now you make some short sentence using possessive pronouns:

It’s his coffee cup.
It’s his.

It’s her coffee cup.
It’s hers.

It’s your coffee cup.
It’s yours.

It’s our coffee cup.
It’s ours.

It’s their coffee cup.
It’s theirs.

OK, here’s a hard question…. Whose favorite English program is this?
And your answer is….

It’s mine!

Good job!
