This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

Yes, it’s that time of year when we give something back to our friends and family. And what better way to show them that you care than by singing a Christmas song. In this final 2008 episode of BLT Eigo, I will sing for all my loyal fans…all three of you. To be honest, I’m an awful singer but my boss said I have to do it or else… I don’t know what the “else” is, but I’m sure I don’t want to find out.

Anyway, please sing with me, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a happy New Year.

Good job!

Whew! I’m glad that’s over! Thanks for joining BLT Eigo right here on BLTnetwork.com. See you next year. Bye!

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

In American, we celebrate a special day to give thanks for everything in our lives. It’s called Thanksgiving Day and falls on Thursday, November 27th in 2008. But it’s not always on November 27th. It changes every year. It falls on the fourth Thursday of November so, in 2009, we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the 26th.

When I was a child, we celebrated Thanksgiving Day by eating Thanksgiving dinner, lots of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, stuff like that…and watching parades and football on TV.

Now living in Japan, all that has changed. My wife hates turkey, so we usually eat chicken or fish…and watch DVD movies. It’s not bad but I sure miss that smoked turkey.

Anyway, I would like to thank all of you for being a friend of BLT Eigo. I hope you will continue watching and tell all your family and friends to join us.

OK, now repeat after me:

Thank you for being a friend.

Lesson #47: Would you mind…?

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

In this episode, I’m talking about “requests”… or how to ask for something. If you want a glass of water or need to see a doctor, it’s important to know how to ask. Here are some easy phrases and responses.

A. I feel sick. Can I see the doctor now?

B. Sure, go ahead.

A. Could you open the door?

B. OK, no problem.

“Would you mind” or “Do you mind” are more polite forms. You are asking if the request is a problem. If it isn’t a problem then the answer will be “no.” Here are some examples:

A. Do you mind if I use your telephone?

B. No, not at all.

A. Would you mind carrying these books?

B. No, I’m happy to help.

NOTE: Sometimes the listener will make a mistake and say “yes,” so listen and watch carefully.

Good Job!

Would you mind joining BLT Eigo next time? No? That’s great! See you then. Bye.

Anyway, today’s topic is about “possessive pronouns” like mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs.

When someone asks, “Whose coffee cup is this?”, you might say, “It’s my coffee cup,” or you could simply say, “It’s mine.” Mine equals “my coffee cup.” OK, now you make some short sentence using possessive pronouns:

It’s his coffee cup.
It’s his.

It’s her coffee cup.
It’s hers.

It’s your coffee cup.
It’s yours.

It’s our coffee cup.
It’s ours.

It’s their coffee cup.
It’s theirs.

OK, here’s a hard question…. Whose favorite English program is this?
And your answer is….

It’s mine!

Hey, whose dirty coffee cup is this on my desk?nbsp; What? Oh, it's mine?nbsp; I guess I left it here after my last show....Whoops.

Anyway, today's topic is about "possessive pronouns" like mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs.

When someone asks, "Whose coffee cup is this?", you might say, "It's my coffee cup," or you could simply say, "It's mine."nbsp; Mine equals "my coffee cup."nbsp; OK, now you make some short sentence using possessive pronouns:

It's his coffee cup.
It's his.

It's her coffee cup.
It's hers.

It's your coffee cup.
It's yours.

It's our coffee cup.
It's ours.

It's their coffee cup.
It's theirs.

OK, here's a hard question.... Whose favorite English program is this?

It's mine!

Whoops , I think I drank too much coffee because I really have to go to the… uh…. you know… to the …..

(flush)

Usually one doesn’t talk about the toilet. But sometimes when you really have to go, you should remember how to do it.

Instead of saying “toilet,” Americans usually say restroom or bathroom.

We say bathroom because the bath is often located in the same room.

When you want to ask permission to use the restroom, just say, “May I use the restroom?” It is also OK to use “Can” instead of “May.”

This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. I’m your host and English Coach, David Hylton.

One of my Japanese friends asked me what “sunny side up” means. I said it means to fry an egg without flipping it over… the yolk, or the yellow part, looks like the sun with some clouds around it.

Then I thought, hey, what great podcast idea!

Anyway, here are some other fired-egg phrases:

Over well: cooked on both sides until the yolk is hard
Over hard: cooked on both sides until the BROKEN yolk is hard
Over medium: cooked on both sides; with the “white” done and the yolk soft
Over easy: cooked on both sides with the white partially cooked and the yolk still liquid or “runny”…ew!

One of my Japanese friends asked me what "sunny side up"nbsp; means.nbsp; I said it means to fry an egg without flipping it over... the yolk, or the yellow part, looks like the sun with some clouds around it.

Then I thought, hey, what great podcast idea!

Anyway, here are some other fired-egg phrases:

Over well: cooked on both sides until the yolk is hard
Over hard: cooked on both sides until the BROKEN yolk is hard
Over medium:nbsp; cooked on both sides; with the "white" done and the yolk soft
Over easy: cooked on both sides with the white partially cooked and the yolk still liquid or "runny"...ew!

Good job!
